NEASC/CPS Vision of the Graduate Workshops 2019

March 4-7, 2019

We are pleased to offer workshops designed to assist schools/districts with developing and refining their Visions of the Graduate.

The 2020 CPS Standards ask schools to create a Vision of the Graduate along with their core values and beliefs about learning. This vision should include the development of transferable skills, knowledge, understandings, and dispositions necessary for future success. After creating a vision and defining these important attributes, many schools struggle with how to create assessments that will adequately measure student progress toward proficiency. For students to think critically, work collaboratively, and learn deeply, systems of assessment must be shifted to match these practices.

"The Vision of the Graduate embeds essential life skills into expectations of our public schools. It’s not just content and academics. It’s about building transferable skills needed for our students to be successful in their future."

- Erin Palonen, Principal, Griswold High School, CT

Day 1 - Developing your Vision of the Graduate

The Day 1 session will start with understanding the importance and implications of developing a Vision of the Graduate for a school or district. Participants will work in groups to identify the transferable skills, knowledge, understandings, and dispositions that students from their school will need to be successful after high school. Teams will work together to draft or revise a vision document.

Day 2 - Assessing your Vision of the Graduate*

The Day 2 session will focus on developing a system of assessment for a school's Vision of the Graduate. Participants will have the chance to prototype performance tasks that will build and measure student progress in the skills of the graduate profile. Through design thinking and rapid prototyping, participants will learn one model for more authentic assessment of their vision.

*To attend Day 2, participants must have completed the Day 1 session or bring a draft of their Vision of the Graduate to work with.
